AFK Heroes

Zones & Nightmare

Updated

The world of AFK Heroes is split into 9 zones. Each zone has a minimum hero level to enter, a difficulty multiplier (it scales every monster's health and attack) and a reward multiplier that scales the gold and XP each kill drops. Deeper zones are harder, and they also carry a higher $AFKHERO earn multiplier, on a separate and steeper curve (see below).

Zone table

Two different multipliers are in play. The Reward multiplier scales gold and XP per kill. Deeper zones also carry a higher $AFKHERO earn multiplier on a separate, steeper curve, which is why the endgame zones are prestige zones, not just loot zones.

"Recommended Power" is the Power a hero without pets needs to farm the zone properly: at least 99% of the time fighting instead of recovering from deaths, measured from live fights with Elites and Giants in the mix. In Nightmare, where your first death drops you back to normal mode, it is the Power at which 99% of hours pass without a single death. The zone card shows the value for the mode you are in, with a green tick when your Power meets it and an orange number when you are under. Heroes at the top of a zone's level range meet stronger monsters and need a little more, and pets help a lot. Falling short doesn't lock you out: the recommended value is guidance only and changes no rewards or limits. "Full premium from" is the separate, lower Power at which you collect the zone's full $AFKHERO premium (see Survivability below).

Each zone card also shows its level range and whether the zone earns $AFKHERO at your current level.

Void Abyss — the endgame zone

Void Abyss is the deepest zone, gated at level 60+. Its monsters are the most lethal in the game: they hit for 2x the attack and have 10x the health of Singularity Vault monsters (x48 attack and x240 health in the table, against Singularity Vault's x24 for both). It has a x13 reward multiplier and a x40 $AFKHERO earn multiplier, nearly double Singularity Vault's x22 and the biggest step on the zone ladder. Because monsters have so much more health, kills take longer here, so chest chances per kill are raised to keep your loot per hour from collapsing. Gold per kill is not raised.

The Void Abyss is also the only source of the endgame crafting materials (Angel Stone, Eye of God, Angel Dust and Universe Dust). Titan Dust and Heart of Titan drop only in Nightmare, in Frozen Spire, Singularity Vault and Void Abyss. Other crafting materials, such as Key Fragments, can drop in any zone. Some of the Void Abyss materials have lifetime supply caps, so they can run out.

Nightmare mode

Nightmare is a high-risk modifier you can toggle in a zone. It makes monsters far more lethal in exchange for richer rewards:

Enemy HPx10
Enemy attackx4 (x2 in the first five zones, see Early-zone mercy)
Gold rewardx2
XP reward+100%
Luck bonus+60
Seal drop boostx2

These stack on top of the zone's own multipliers: gold doubles, XP gets +100% (added to your other XP bonuses, see below), the +60 Luck pushes drops toward higher rarities, and Seals on monster drops are roughly twice as likely. Nightmare also raises your share of the reward pool while you stay in it. Because monsters have ten times the health and hit four times as hard, only a well-geared hero should switch it on in a deep zone.

Under-geared heroes will get bled out. Make sure your Power comfortably clears the zone's recommended value for Nightmare before enabling it in the deeper zones. If your hero dies in Nightmare, it comes back in normal mode. You can switch Nightmare on again once you are back on your feet.

Early-zone mercy

To keep fresh heroes alive long enough to find gear, monsters in the first five zones (Dusty Dock through Pumpforge Gate) deal only half attack damage. This applies in Nightmare too, where it turns the x4 attack into x2. Their health is unchanged; only incoming damage is softened. Bosses are not softened. From Molten Foundry onward, monsters hit at full strength.

$AFKHERO earn eligibility

Not every zone earns $AFKHERO. To stop high-level heroes from farming trivial low zones, a zone only earns $AFKHERO if it is within 10 levels below your hero's level. For example, a level 40 hero earns in zones whose unlock level is 30 or higher, but earns nothing in Dusty Dock.

  • The two deepest zones always earn. Singularity Vault and Void Abyss count regardless of the 10-level rule, so top-level heroes are never stranded with nowhere deeper to go.
  • Heroes who have not bought a hero pack do not earn $AFKHERO in any zone. A hero pack is required to earn tokens.

Survivability & the deep-zone premium

The extra $AFKHERO weight of deeper zones is a premium earned by gear, not a handout. Each zone has a premium Power floor (the "Full premium from" column of the table above). The base part of the zone multiplier always applies, but the premium part scales with how close your Power is to that floor. A hero at or above the floor collects the full premium; an under-geared hero in a deep zone still earns, but a reduced share of the bonus. This rewards genuinely progressing your hero rather than parking a weak character in a high zone. The recommended values on the zone cards are a separate, display-only guide and play no part in the premium.

How XP bonuses add up

Since Season 4 every XP bonus adds to one total instead of multiplying the others. XP per kill is the monster's XP, times the zone's reward multiplier, times one plus your total XP bonus:

  • XP Bonus from your gear (capped at +300%, raised by a full Angel or God craft set)
  • your guild and skin XP bonuses
  • +100% while an XP Boost runs
  • +100% during a Server Goal XP window or an XP event
  • +100% in Nightmare

For example, +135% from gear with an XP Boost running is +235%, not double +135%. There is no cap on the total. Gold, drops and the $AFKHERO earning formula do not change: Nightmare still doubles gold, and Elite and Giant monsters still pay their own XP multiplier.

Levels 1 to 29 need the same XP as in Season 3. From level 30 each level needs more, and from level 50 every level costs about 200 million XP. Season 4 XP from level 50:
